In spring of 2008, CrossFit Huntsville was born on the green floor in the Matrix gym. Each class, the rig would be moved out onto the floor, shoes and socks would be left at the door, and a handful of athletes would throw down. Back then, punishment was enforced for all athletes who didn't have the top score, so everyone but the day's top dog would slug through another workout that was more like torture than a WOD. Athletes would wade through the gymnastics pits carrying kettle bells, or climb the one rope barefoot and bare-legged. Quickly, much to everyone's surprise, the number of people wanting to participate in this new and unconventional training grew, and CFHSV was growing and adding more classes by the month. In mid 2009, CrossFit Huntsville the affiliate became an LLC, and later than year moved from the Matrix into the first warehouse on Johnson Road. Affectionately known as "the dirty warehouse", our new home was truly rustic in every way. A pull-up bar was welded into its permanent spot, and still barefoot most of the time, athletes threw down day after day, in a quest to get stronger, fitter and faster. In 2008 I was doing some push ups in the Matrix gym when my ‘workout’ was interrupted and I was invited back to the ‘green floor’ to do some Wallball Shots. I was told it would get my heart rate up. Sho did. Did Karen RX with no scaling options advised. Bout died and remember not being able to sit into my car or stand from the seated position for two weeks without nauseating pain. Came right back for more. Didn’t even know I was CrossFitn’

It only took a few weeks of hearing Nathaniel and my dad talk about this new thing called CrossFit before I jumped in full force. I looked forward to it each day with excited anticipation, and couldn’t wait to get on that green floor and learn a new skill or put a little more weight on my bar. So many great friendships were formed and great memories made, and my love and passion for CrossFit intensified daily. And as we approach our big anniversary celebration this weekend, I am so thankful and grateful for every step of my CrossFit journey!

A little perspective...

When I started CrossFit HSV in 2010, my 101 was with Russell Berger (it was not a formal 101 that we know today, and yes Russell, you were mean). Tabata air squats and some other horrific movement. I could not walk or sit for two weeks. At the same time, I had also been diagnosed as pre-diabetic with an AIC of 6.3. Eight years later, my AIC has been normal every year since (as recent as last week) and although I struggle with my weight, not being diabetic due to what CrossFit does to my ability to manage my blood sugar physiology..still shocks my primary care provider since I am going against the grain. My mother and three of sisters (one is my twin) are Type 2 diabetics. I have two uncles that have died from complications of diabetes. What we do is fun, hard, frustrating, but bonding and sharing this pain with you all is awesome. But please know, what we do really does make a difference in our health. And doing it with all of you, the coaches and the owners of CrossFit Huntsville is icing on the cake.

Happy 10 year anniversary CF Huntsville!!
And thank you :-)!!

I’ve said this 100 times, I wish I would’ve started Crossfit back in the early days. Fun following the history.

The greater accomplishment is owning your health Devonne and that’s wonderful but a pretty cool side note is that 7 years after starting CrossFit in 2017 you made the Qualifier in your age group and finished in the top 200 in the world! You’ve got a smile that lights up the gym. Keep it up girlfriend ?

It's impressive that the founders of CFHSV had the willingness and open-mindedness to make the investment in trying something new, long before Crossfit became an American cultural phenomena (2014ish?). I'm with BP- wish I had found it sooner!

In the spring of 2008 I was the head coach of the girls jr. high basketball team at Madison academy . I coached this girl named Murphy who led our team to the county championship. I weighed in at a whopping 270 pounds. I could eat a half a gallon of ice cream at record speed. Didn’t even consider working out at this point in my life.

Amazing testimony Devonne! Truly. I have a similar story but I'm saving it for the 2013/2014 post since that's where this chapter began for me :)

Desperately hoping this baby-to-be doesn't prevent me from coming to the celebration this weekend!!

In 2008 I was working for the HEALS clinic as a Social Worker and the varsity boys basketball coach at Westminster Christian Academy. Your girls team vs my boys team would’ve been a good game.

In 2008 I joined The Matrix globo gym. Saw my first kipping pull-ups through the window that divided the cardio equipment from the T&T room. Took me 5 years of watching that group of Crossfitters outgrow the facility. and 5 years to decide to get uncomfortable.

Lots of great memories from the matrix and the dirty warehouse. No one really knew how to do anything. We all were just trying to figure it out as we went.
